I'm Unbeatable

A gift to a friend. Not really how I draw anymore, but I still like it.

Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon -- Review

Tue Dec 22, 2009, 7:26 PM
  • Mood: Not Impressed
  • Listening to: Murmaider - Dethklok
  • Reading: this review
  • Watching: nothing
  • Playing: gpxplus.net - (username: Mafia)
  • Eating: Nothing
  • Drinking: Eggnog
Anyone who remembers the original Spyro franchise will not recall amazing graphics, memorable musical scores, or particularly challenging boss fights. However, they might remember the enjoyable gameplay experience or the interactive mini-games that littered an expansive universe full of entertainment. You could play for an hour and complete a level or you could play for three hours and never leave the area in which you started. That was the best thing about the original Spyro games, they allowed the player to set their own pace at which to enjoy the game.

Not so with the newest release. Not at all. Characterized by it's mediocre graphics, repetitive battle stages, and completely underwhelming plotline, Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon made my renewed interest in the Playstation shrink and dissolve into nothingness once again.

Picking up the game at first was difficult in itself. I had lost interest in the Spyro franchise ever since the fourth game came out for the PS2 and was unaware of any changes to it since then. But my father picked it up for me and my brother, and we were polite enough to play it.

High points:
- Flight capabilities: Remember those hard-to-reach jumps that could kill you if you missed? Remedied.
- 2 Player Mode: Sadly lacking in previous games.
- Environments: Twilight Falls, Valley of Avalar, and the outside of Malefor's Lair were all very pleasant to traipse around (for the short time I was allotted to be there).
- Music: Not overbearing. I'd go so far to say it was refreshing, even. There were nice points of silence between background musical scores. Oddly reminiscent of Howard Shore, though.

Low Points:
- Gameply in General: Once one stage was finished, another began. Unlike the older games you were given no time to explore your surroundings. The whole thing felt very rushed to me. Not to mention the repetitive battles and unchallenging (borderline annoying) puzzles.
- Characters: Awful. God, that was awful. I stopped following along after the fifth cutscene. Cynder's voice actress was particularly emotionless.
("No, Spyro. Stop. Please, don't do this.")
Not to mention all the Mary-Sueness that accompanied Spyro wherever he went.
- Plot: Boring. Unoriginal. Stupid. Incomplete. Shall I go on? More than once I found myself proclaiming, "Now where's the One Ring? I must destroy it to save Middle Earth!"

Overall Rating:
2/5 stars

I'd describe this as a rushed, repetitive game that is the dictionary definition of every other fantasy game in the book. If you like repeatedly pounding the square button and constantly being unable to get a full view of your surroundings because the camera angle moves about two degrees, this is the game for you.

...Pretty good, all things considered?
Excellent.

I don't do much, 'cept a little arts-ing here and there. If you give me food I might give you a hug. Maybe. Nah, that was a lie.
